Birchleaf Turning

Celebrating the Lives of Alaska’s Beautiful Trees

Turning Trees into

Beautiful Functional Art

John Unruh’s passion for wood working began at age eight when he started making yard signs, puzzles (some with Elvis Presley’s face that he sold to his classmates) and moved on to chests, benches and lathe turning. As with all of us, opportunities led to a long career in management, marketing and advertising and teaching MBA students in several countries. He was finally able to turn his hobby into a profession. John takes great pride and in using a log destined for the wood stove into an object of beauty and function. His pieces are often purchased for mementos of an Alaskan trip or as wedding gifts. For him, this is the ultimate honor.

Commemorative Platters or Bowls

John is able to create a platter or bowl to commemorate your anniversary or another special occasion. Contact him with your ideas and he’ll provide you with a sketch of your inscription.

This bowl was made from a dying Alaska Spruce tree. It has to be taken down so the bowl represents not only the tree but the vibrant colorss reflect the active family's lifestyle. They love it, too.
